Anna Maria Island Beach Photos (Bradenton)

Anna Maria Island has plenty of great beaches, including Anna Maria Beach, Bayfront Park, Palma Sola Causeway, Manatee County Public Beach, Holmes Beach, Cortez Beach, Coquina Beach, and Leffis Key.

Anna Maria Island is just west of the city of Bradenton and overlooks the mouth of Tampa Bay. Anna Maria Island beaches are clean and covered with beautiful white sand. There are few tall condominiums. The entire island is mostly residential, with plenty of beach houses for rent. It is a quiet island with no night life. The water is clean and shallow for swimming and when the surf is up there are several excellent surf spots.

Anna Maria Island has an abundance of beautiful beach houses, island house rentals, some condominiums, and very nice small hotels at very attractive prices. Not all are on the beach, so be sure to specify what you want. Obviously you will pay more for a beach front house than for a motel room two blocks off the beach.

In February of 2007, construction began on the new "Coquina Beach Trail." See photos and find out why everyone isn't happy with changes caused by the new trail.

Anna Maria Gulf waters during May 2006. It doesn't get any better than this! Eighty-one degrees and as clear as a swimming pool.

More photos of Anna Maria's crystal clear waters.

Better than a swimming pool! This photos taken just north of Oak Avenue.

At left is a view of the beach at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island. Egmont Key can be seen on the horizon at the right edge of the photo. Egmont Key is about 3 miles away and can only be reached by boat. It has an interesting history and an important lighthouse. Click here to see some photos of my visit to Egmont Key.

Here is a local beach in Anna Maria at the end of Magnolia Avenue. It was recently renourished with fresh sand pumped onto the beach from offshore. I have seen this beach when it was only 20 feet wide. No matter how wide or narrow it is, it's still a great beach.

At left is the Gulf shoreline in the city of Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island, in the vicinity of 69th Street. The multi-story buildings you see in the photo are the tallest condos on the island. I hope they will remain so. As you may have noticed by now, there is nothing to obstruct you from walking the entire length of the island, and many people do so every day.

This is a photo of the pier at the Manatee County Public Beach. When I was a teenager, we used to carry our surfboards out to the end and jump off into the surf. Now the pier is closed due to concerns about its structural integrity after the partial collapse of the middle pier at Cortez beach in late 2006.

Here is a view of the public beach looking south. I took the photo standing on the pier. The reduced file size necessary to put these photos on the web does not reveal the beauty of the water on this weekday afternoon in the month of May.

At left is the restaurant/gift shop, beach pavilion and social center of the Manatee Public Beach. When I was a kid there were steps leading up to the roof and we would go up to enjoy the view. Now the restaurant (Cafe On The Beach) is much better and is very popular for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you are lucky you might even hear some live acoustic music some evenings. Here is a restaurant critic's review of the Cafe on the Beach as published in the Bradenton Herald.

This is Coquina Beach at the southern end of Anna Maria Island, in the city of Bradenton Beach. It still looks pretty much the way it did when I was a kid. I've been going to this beach for more than 35 years. I never get tired of it. The tire tracks in the sand are from the life guards' all-terrain vehicles. Fortunately, cars are not allowed on the beaches anywhere on the lower Gulf coast. The erosion control structures you see stretching out into the water are useless.  They only seem to aggravate the problem of beach erosion. During beach renourishment they are completely covered with fresh sand, only to be exposed again in a few years or less. The limestone rocks piled around the structures do attract fish though and provided me with many hours of interesting snorkeling. There are lots of picnic tables under the Australian pines on the left side of the photo.
